Interview: Yuli Sato (Yulibow)

Name: Yuli Sato
Age: 19
Where are you from?: Originally I am from Calgary, Canada, but I now live in Montreal, Canada where I go to university.
Tools of the trade: I have tons of cameras that I use on a regular basis: an SLR Olympus E-510 (digital), a couple polaroids, a vintage Perlux from 1952 (which I am in dire need of fixing since its my FAVORITE camera to use), disposables, and a 35mm Minolta film camera that was my dad's. I also use Photoshop CS2 to fiddle with color casts and such : )
Artistic influences: My influences have changed greatly over the past couple of years. When I first started taking photography seriously I used to want to be a really high-fashion photographer (doesn't everybody? haha) but over the past 2 years I have developed a style that is my own, which involves more fantasy/dreamy qualities that are still a bit fashiony but less cookie cutter. It's my dream one day to work for Lula magazine (aka my bible)
Why do you like photography / art: This is a pretty hard question . . . I suppose I like it because it is my one true passion that I feel I create great results in. I love art as well (though I can hardly draw or anything like that) because I believe a good knowledge of art can be really inspiring when thinking of ideas for photographs. I also love photography because I feel a connection to the first primitive photographers who used film . . . the history of photography is such an amazing one and I love that I have something in common with people from over a hundred years ago.
Random facts / information: I run a magazine called Dousee, and the second issue is due out sometime this summer. It was created with a desire to showcase up and coming talent in the photography world. On that line, I also created a photography-interview-blog back in March of 2009 that also showcases young talent.
