Interview: Emily Tebbetts

Name:
Emily Tebbetts

Age: 18

Where are you from?: New Jersey, but I go to school in Boston

Tools of the trade: Nikon D700, 50mm f/1.8, Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 HSM, Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro, and occasionally a SB-600 flash :)

Artisitic influences: At the moment, my biggest inspirations are:
Nikoline (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nikolinelr/)
Jane (http://fille-ordinaire.deviantart.com/)
Sarah (http://aurorawinter.deviantart.com/)
Nirrimi and Matt Caplin (http://pretty-as-a-picture.deviantart.com/ and www.flickr.com/photos/mattcaplinphotography/)

These are just a few of SO many, but these are my current favorites of people who have styles that I love and am inspired by in my photographs, although I have a ton more favorites that are more conceptual or just have different styles.

Why do you like photography/art?:
Creating an image that I love is such a high for me. Really, it's a rush. I love everything about the shoot, especially if, when I'm editing, the colors go the way I want them easily. I love when the model and I get creative and keep building off each other and get awesome shots, and I love when something that I take really strikes home with somebody. Also, I've met and gotten to know amazing people through photography, both in school and real life, and on the web. Everything about it is beautiful, and I love it.

Where do you see yourself in the future?:
Hmm. Happy, hopefully. I want to look back and say that I've lived my life well. I hope to have a career that I'm happy and creatively challenged in (though it doesn't have to have something to do with photography-- I'm a communications major and I have a wide variety of options ahead of me!), and I hope to have a family. I hope I'm a good wife and mother and friend. I hope I will have traveled and met tons of amazing people and seen amazing places. I hope to feel real and whole. And I hope that I will have had a ton of priceless experiences because of photography :)

Where did you learn how to edit and do you have any tips?:
I've learned a lot from messing around in photoshop, and sometimes if I want to know how to do something specific, I'll try and look up a tutorial. Also, something that I didn't expect-- awhile back, I bought some of Nirrimi and Matt's curves. I never really understood curves before that, but once I bought them, I started to get an understanding of what they are and how to use them. I didn't end up really use the curves that I bought (they are very good, just don't usually match the look I'm going for), but from buying them, I've experimented a ton in curves and gained a much better understanding of color, and have been able to create the colors and look that I'm going for much better. So I'd definitely suggest to people to go out and download curves and other presets (they can be free or paid) and from them try to gain their own unique understanding of color.

Film or digital?:
Film is much more magical and real, but I almost exclusively use digital, and I love both.

Anything else you'd like to share?:
Just that every compliment and favorite and feature like this mean so much to me, really. I wish I was better at expressing my gratitude, but thank you to anyone who supports me :)
